Population-based epidemiological studies (incidence phase)

The cooperation of the local community is essential – older peer mentors encouraged participation in Lima, Peru

The 10/66 Dementia Research Group has just begun a 2.5 to three year incidence phase follow-up of the baseline sample. The incidence phase will exploit the rich baseline cross-sectional data in the six Latin American countries (Cuba, Dominican Republic, Venezuela, Mexico, Peru and Argentina) and in China to assess risk factors for incident dementia, stroke and mortality. Verbal autopsy will be used to identify causes of death. The incidence phase will involve approximately 15,000 older people.

First results should be available in early 2009, and the incidence phase will be completed in 2010.
