10/66 Population-based Study (Prevalence Phase) Protocols

These comprise

  1. The casefinder study (an assessment of the validity of dementia case identification by trained basic level community health workers)
  2. The population-based survey
  3. A randomised controlled trial of an educational and training caregiver intervention delivered by community health workers.

A. 10/66 Population-based Study Manual

This provides a much more detailed procedure for the implementation of the core protocol for the population-based studies, including the casefinder component and the caregiver RCT

B. Paper Questionnaires for 10/66 Population-based Studies

Each of the seven interviews/ assessments required for the population-based study core protocol (listed below) is provided (in English) as a word file with the same name.

Interview Administered to Scope
background_participant Participant Socio-demographic and risk factor interview
background_informant Informant as per background participant, but used where the participant is too impaired to give reliable information
household Participant, informant and other household members Age ascertainment, household composition, household assets
gms Participant The Geriatric Mental State structured clinical interview
informant Informant carer/ coresident strain, care arrangements, informant report of cognitive and functional decline, and onset and course of dementia
neuroex Participant BP, anthropometry and neurological examination

C. Paper Data Coding Sheets for 10/66 Population-based Studies

In order to save money on photocopying and printing, we have prepared brief data coding sheets for each interview. Each interviewer will then need only one copy of the full interview, and codes the responses onto the much briefer data coding sheets instead.

These data coding sheets are in a self-extracting archive file (you can choose between .rar and .zip archives):
data_coding_sheets.rar (zipped .rar archive) data_coding_sheets.zip (zipped .zip archive)

D. Epidata Data Entry Files and Data Processing Files for 10/66 Population-based Study

All data collected in the 10/66 studies is entered using the EPIDATA, a public domain data entry program, which can be copied and distributed without charge. It can therefore be downloaded relatively easily from the internet. First go to the EPIDATA site, and follow the instructions. In case of difficulty read the instructions in this file epidata_instructions.doc

Each of the seven interviews/ assessments listed above are also supported by epidata data entry files, which can be downloaded as a zip archive file.

*Entrevista completa, por uso directamente con computadoras

Also included are data entry files for a) the door knocking registers (households and participants), b) the casefinder process, and c) the baseline and outcome assessment for the randomised controlled trial. The self-extracting archive file should be extracted into the c:\ (root) directory on your computer. This will generate a c:\data directory with sub directories for each of the seven interviews. These sub-directories contain not only the epidata files but also command files for processing these data. These will provide variable and value labels for all of the data sets and will generate automatically:

  • Age, from the household file
  • Impairment, disability (WHODAS) and pain scales from the background file
  • Service use and associated costs, from the background file
  • Income, from the background file
  • Caregiver strain, and caregiver income from the informant file
  • CSI'D' cognitive test score (cogscore)
  • CSI'D' informant interview score (relscore)
  • CSI'D' discriminant function score (dfscore)
  • GMS/ AGECAT diagnoses
  • 10/66 Algorithm dementia diagnosis (as per the method described in the Lancet paper)
  • DSM IV dementia diagnosis

Follow the instructions given in the manual (see above).
